Effective teaching and learning process is essential to bring out desirable behavioural as well as academic changes in learners. At the same time, certain learner characteristics influence his/her perspective regarding an area of study. Learner characteristics that influence his/her interest in a course of study are: Attention span and rate of retention of the learners Interest in a particular subject will decide a learner’s commitment towards learning that subject Learning style and learning strategies of the learners Individual mental capacities and skillsets of the learners in the concerned subject Existing or previous knowledge and experiences of the learners in the subject or course Grasping ability of individual learners Attitudes of learners about learning in general NOTE: Parent’s interests, socio-economic background,s and the size of the family can also be considered as the characteristics of the learners, however, they will not have any direct influence in their perspectives regarding a particular course of study. Hence, learner’s characteristics such as their commitment, prior knowledge and skills in the concerned area will influence their perspective regarding a particular course of study.
