Teacher centred approach refers to the active involvement of the teacher while the learners passively listen to the teacher. The needs and interests of individual students are overlooked. Students’ participation in the learning activities are dictated by the teacher. Key Points Some key points related to it: Teacher concentrates on right answer. The focus is on teaching rather than learning. Teacher is mostly concerned with the completion of the course content The teacher expects absolute obedience from the students, hence, students are not active learners. Little or no scope for questioning, debates and sharing of ideas. Suitable for teaching a large number of students at the same time. Suitable for teaching historical facts to students in the higher classes. Imposing facts on children makes them lose interest in the teaching-learning process. Hence, I and II are characteristics of a teacher-centred approach. Hint The focus is on learning than teaching is the characteristic of the student-centred approach which always emphasizes providing ample opportunities to the children to foster their own strategy of learning and ways of thinking to perform a task or classroom activities.
