Calculation: Let the two numbers be x and y. According to S1; ⇒ x × y = 21 ----(1) According to S2; ⇒ x + y = 10 ----(2) From equation(1), x = 21/y From equation(1), (21/y) + y = 10 ⇒ (21 + y2)/y = 10 ⇒ y2 – 10y + 21 = 0 ⇒ y2 – 7y – 3y + 21 = 0 ⇒ y(y – 7) – 3(y – 7) = 0 ⇒ (y – 3)(y – 7) =0 If, (y – 3) = 0 ⇒ y = 3 Either, (y – 7) =0 ⇒ y = 7 ∴ S1 and S2 together are sufficient to answer the Question, but neither S1 alone nor S2 alone is sufficient to answer the Question.
