Guru Amar Das established the first pilgrim center for the Sikhs, symbolized by the construction of a well with 84 steps to reach the water for bathing, at Goindwal. Key Points Guru Amar Das was the third of the ten gurus of Sikhism. He was the contemporary of Akbar. He established his Gaddi at Goindwal also known as Goindwal Sahib which is located on the banks of the river Beas in the Taran Taran district in the Majha region of Punjab state in India. It became an important center for the Sikh religion in the 16th century during the time of the Guru Amar Das Ji. With a view of providing a place where the Sikhs could have a holy dip while visiting Goindwal, Guru Amar Das got a baoli (a deep open water reservoir) dug.
