India is a multilingual country with numerous languages and dialects. There are approximately 1652 languages and dialects that belong to the five different language families in the country. Key Points Mother-tongue is a language that a person has been exposed to from birth. The first language of a child is part of the personal, social, and cultural identity. When learners come to school for the first time they come with their mother tongue as it is acquired unconsciously and does not require any formal instruction. Students from different home languages struggle in English medium classrooms as they are unaware of it and the classroom language is more formal to them. In this situation, the teacher should provide initial support to students by: creating heterogeneous groups of mixed English language proficiency where students work collaboratively to achieve learning outcomes. It develops language skills, critical thinking, communication, and lifelong learning skills. using physical gestures for certain words and phrases while reading aloud as many words can be introduced through action, expressions, and gestures. For Example, adjectives: "sad", " happy"; mime and taking a hat off your head to teach hat, and so on. building a word wall in the classroom with words in English and their possible equivalents in home languages as it provides students an opportunity where the words are seen, noticed, and used by them. Hence, it is clear that weekly tasks of grammar-based worksheets to be done at home by all students in the class will NOT help in providing initial support for this situation as it can make learning monotonous and more difficult for students.
