​ Important Points The term 'Hindustan' was used in the thirteenth century by Minhaj - i - Siraj, a chronicler who wrote in Persian, he meant the areas of Punjab, Haryana and the lands between the Ganga and Yamuna. He used the term in a political sense for lands that were a part of the dominions of the Delhi Sultan. The areas included in this term shifted with the extent of the Sultanate but the term never included south India. Babur also used the term Hindustan to explain the geographies and cultures of the subcontinent in the early 16th century, and that was similar to the way Amir Khusrau (a famous poet) did it in the 14th century. Historians today have to be careful about the terms they use because they meant different things in the past. For example, today we use the term 'foreigner' to mean someone who is not an Indian, but in the medieval period, it meant any stranger who was not a part of a society or culture. ​So, above points clearly shows that both (A) and (B) are true but (B) is not the correct explanation of (A).
