Given∶ Pipe M fills a cistern in 4 hrs. Pipe N fills a cistern in 6 hrs. Extra time taken to fill the cistern = 36 min = 36/60 hrs. Formula Used∶ If X and Y are inlet and Z is outlet. then net part of the cistern filled in 1hr = (1/x) + (1/y) - (1/z) An inlet can fill a tank in X min. and another inlet in Y min. If both the inlets are opened at the same time, the net part of the tank filled in one minute is given by; (1/x + 1/y) Calculation∶ Efficiency of pipe M = 1/4 Efficiency of pipe N = 1/6 Efficiency of leakage O = - 1/n Combined efficiency of pipe M and N = 1/4 + 1/6 = 5/12 So, The two pipes M and N can fill he cistern in 12/5 hrs. When the leakage is allowed the time to fill the cistern = 12/5 + 36/60 = 180/60 = 3 hrs. ⇒ 1/4 + 1/6 - 1/n = 1/3 ⇒ 1/n = 5/12 - 1/3 = (5 - 4)/12 = 1/12 ⇒ n = 12 hrs. ∴ The leakage can empty the cistern in 12 hrs.
