In making decisions about important questions, it is desirable to be able to distinguish between ‘strong’ arguments and ‘weak’ arguments. ‘Strong’ arguments are those, which are both important and directly related to the question. ‘Weak’ arguments are those, which are of minor importance and also may not be directly related to the question or may be related to a trivial aspect of the question. The questions below if followed by two arguments numbered I and II. You have to decide which of the arguments a ‘strong’ argument is and which a ‘weak’ argument is. Statement: Are artificial sweeteners a good alternative to sugar? Arguments: I. Yes, most people consume artificial sweeteners because they want to lose weight as they have very few calories compared to sugar. II. No, because they contain chemicals which may cause headaches and other severe reactions in individuals. Correct Answer Only argument II is strong Option 2 would be the correct answer as argument II seems to be strong. Both the arguments are directly related to the statement but argument I shows that people use them to lose weight whereas there are many several options or methods which an individual can use to lose weight without harming their health. And argument II talks about why artificial sweeteners shouldn’t be used as it causes many problems if consumed. Thus this seems to be more important and hence becomes the strong argument.
