The responsibilities of English teachers have become manifold. The teaching of English is to cater to the various needs of the learners. The learners need to be prepared to use English globally. Keeping these aims in mind, the strategies for teaching is formed. Many modern trends have been introduced in the teaching of English. Important Points Structured teaching This teaching encourages a learner to master the structures of English. Teachers teach the Grammatical structures through language drills and repetitions in the early stages. In this teaching, the teacher uses the following for teaching English: Word order: Word order or sentence structure can change the meaning Function words: Function words modify the meaning of a sentence. Inflections: an affix (prefix or suffix) can change the base form of a word. A teacher of class VIII discussed 'determiners' in her classroom through a short text in which determiners occur many times and learners were made to notice them in use. This was followed by learners using the same in their own language for particular purposes. The teacher then brought to the notice of the learners, the uses of determiners in contexts. Here, structures are taught based on the principles of selection, gradation. Also, grammar is taught in a meaningful context. Thus, a Task-based language teaching strategy is employed by the teacher in her classroom. Additional Information Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) Language learners in CLT learn and practice English through interaction with one another and the teacher. Learners talk about personal experiences with peers, and teachers teach topics that encourage language skills related to various situations. The importance is given to meaning functions rather than the structure of the language. It helps the learners to acquire better language skills. In conscious teaching, the teacher introduces the topic at the very beginning of the class. It is the traditional method of teaching. Task-based language teaching (TBLT) It is a pedagogical framework for the theory and teaching of second or foreign languages. It means teaching with, learning with, and assessing with tasks—not isolated grammar forms— in order to promote functionality in the language. Task-based teaching offers the opportunity for "natural‟ learning inside the classroom. It emphasizes meaning over form but can also cater to language form. It is intrinsically motivating. It is compatible with a learner-centered educational philosophy but also allows for teacher input and direction.
