Place value refers to the value indicated by a digit in a number based on its position in the number. For example, 5 in 650 represents 5 tens or 50. However, the 5 in 5002 represents 5 thousand or 5000. It is important that children understand that whilst a digit can be the same, its value depends on where it is in the number. Key Points Difficulties children face with place value- Abstractness- As place value is abstract, many young children struggle with it. Young children are concrete learners which means they require sensory experience to further their education. Multi-digit numbers- It is easy for most of the students to find the place value of smaller numbers instead of multi-digit numbers. This kind of error occurs because the students place the nominal values from 1 to 9 at different places, but when it comes to putting a 0 at any place in the number they get confused and are unable to recognize zero at any number whether it be tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. So it is important for the teacher to revisit the concept of the place value of 3-digit and 4-digit numbers and make their student's concepts more understanding otherwise this error can occur again. Hence, we conclude that the most appropriate strategy to remediate this error is revisiting the concept of the place value of 3-digit and 4-digit numbers. Hint The drill and practice approach is not suitable while teaching abstract concepts and when it is used too often it's hard for the students to focus on the subject. Writing numbers from 5000 to 5100 and representing 5036 on the number line will not help children understand the reason behind the error.
